PARA astronom menemukan ratusan planet menyerupai Jupiter di galaksi Bimasakti. Ini memberikan harapan bahwa kita akan menemukan planet-planet yang berbatu dan memiliki air seperti di Bumi.
Seorang astronom dari Harvard University Dimitar Sasselov menyatakan sejumlah planet berbatu tersebut memiliki massa yang lebih besar daripada Bumi. Karenanya, planet tersebut dinamakannya Super-Earths atau Super-Bumi yang mencerminkan massa mereka.
“Bahkan, planet-planet yang memiliki massa 2 hingga 10 kali massa Bumi tersebut dapat lebih unggul untuk menjamin kehidupan berkelanjutan,” ujar Sasselov. Maklum, massa planet berhubungan dengan tektonik. Semakin besar sebuah planet, akan lebih banyak aktivitas tektoniknya, seperti gempa.
Sekadar informasi, para ahli meyakini gerakan tektonik berguna untuk melepaskan karbon yang ada di dalam batu. Betul, bila karbon terlalu banyak akan menyebabkan pemanasan global. Namun, bila karbon terlalu sedikit, maka planet menjadi dingin.
Penemuan Super-Bumi tersebut berhasil berkat berbagai misi astronomi, seperti yang dilakukan oleh teleskop luar angkasa Kepler pada tahun ini.
Sasselov memperkirakan akan kembali ditemukan ratusan planet yang menyerupai Bumi lainnya di galaksi Bimasakti. “Dalam 5-10 tahun ke depan, kita akan kembali menemukan 50-100 Super-Bumi,” ujarnya.
